EUGENE - The No. 14 UCLA softball team (36-16, 12-10) springboarded off a nine-run sixth inning to beat No. 12 Oregon (37-15, 11-9) by a 10-0 count in the series opener Thursday evening at Howe Field.

UO suffered only its second loss via a shutout this season, while the Bruins – the national leader in slugging (.599) this week - scored in double digits for the 14th time this year and tied the most runs scored by a Duck foe in 2012.

Oregon ended with three hits, thanks to a double by sophomore Kailee Cuico (1-for-3) and singles by senior Kelsey Chambers (1-for-3) and freshman Janie Takeda (1-for-2). Senior Christie Nieto also reached twice via walks, and senior Lindsey Chambers walked once.

The Bruins scored its first run in the fifth inning when after a one-out single by Kellie Fox, Talee Snow followed with a run-scoring double to the right center field gap.

In the sixth, UCLA struck for nine runs on seven hits, thanks to an RBI double by Dani Yudin, RBI singles by Alyssa Tiumalu, Talee Snow and Katie Schroeder, and a grand slam by Sammy Camuso.

Junior Jessica Moore (25-12) struck out two, walked five, allowed 10 hits, and all nine runs allowed were earned in her 5.2 innings. Freshman Karissa Hovinga retired the final out, walked one, allowed one hit and one earned run.

Moore improved to fifth all-time among Duck pitchers in career appearances (123) and seventh for appearances in a season (41). She also climbed a spot on the season starts list to fifth place (36) and matched her career high.

UCLA starter Jessica Hall (19-11) struck out five, walked two, and allowed two hits in her five innings of work. Ally Carda pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked one, and allowed one hit and no runs.

At the plate for the Bruins, two opposing hitters had multiple hits – Katie Schroeder (3-for-4, 1 RBI) and Talee Snow (2-for-3, 2 RBI).

Defensively, the Ducks turned their 17th double play of the season to end the third inning on a 5-4-3 grounder that went from third base to second to first.

In other action around the league, No. 1 California scored two runs in the seventh to beat No. 2 ASU at home, 4-2; Utah won its second league tilt of the year with its 6-0 shutout of No. 15 Stanford in Salt Lake City; and the game between No. 24 Oregon State plays and No. 16 Arizona will end later tonight.

Looking ahead in the three-game set, the Ducks and Bruins meet for a 6 p.m. game Friday and the regular season finale Saturday at noon.

Friday’s game is a Strike Out Cancer day, and fans are asked to wear pink to support the national Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.

Saturday’s series finale will feature a Senior Day pre-game introduction for UO’s five seniors. The first 50 fans can also take advantage of a free t-shirt giveaway, and senior citizens will receive $1 general admission. Kids can take part in a sign-making contest, and afterwards run bases and get player autographs.

Later this weekend, softball fans can watch the NCAA Tournament 64-team selection show Sunday night on ESPN-U at 7 p.m.
