EUGENE, Ore. -- Sixth-ranked California defeated Oregon, 72-45, on Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene. It was the Golden Bears seventh consecutive win which improved their record to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in Pac-12 Conference play. The Ducks dropped to 3-19 on the season and 1-9 in league action.
Devyn Galland scored 11 points to lead the team in scoring for the first time in her career. Fellow freshmen Jillian Alleyne added nine points and six rebounds for UO.
Liz Brenner contributed five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Cal had four players score in double-figures, led by Talia Caldwell and Gennifer Brandon who both tallied double-double efforts. Caldwell posted 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Brandon finished with 14 points and 12 boards.
The Golden Bears did most of their damage in the paint where they out-scored UO, 44-22. Cal also had a 22-10 advantage for points off turnovers, forcing UO into 24 turnovers.
The Ducks were out-rebounded for the first time since their Jan. 4 game against then 16th-ranked UCLA. Cal grabbed 51 boards, including 17 on the offensive end, while UO hauled down 40 rebounds.
Cal made 40.3 percent of its field goal attempts (29-of-72), while Oregon was limited to 26.7 percent from the floor (16-of-60).
The Ducks, who had only four assists to 16 made baskets, shot a season-worst 12.5 percent from behind the 3-point arc (2-of-16).
Oregon was without the services of Ariel Thomas, the team’s second-leading scorer, who did not play because of a head injury. As a result, the Ducks used their seventh different starting lineup of the year (Danielle Love, Jillian Alleyne, Liz Brenner, Jordan Loera and Amanda Delgado).
The Ducks took a 2-0 lead after baseline drive and lay-up by Jordan Loera. But Cal countered by scoring the next 11 points to take a nine-point edge with 16:52 in the first half.
The Golden Bears forced seven UO turnovers (on five steals) in the first eight minutes to extend their lead to 13 points, 19-6. Oregon, which was held scoreless over an eight-minute stretch (15:44 – 7:02), fell behind 30-6 after Cal registered a 19-0 run.
Cal led by as many as 24 points on three occasions in the first half and took a 38-19 lead into the halftime locker room. The Ducks made just 6-of-28 from the field (21.4 percent) over the first 20 minutes and were led offensively by Delgado who had a team-best five points. Cal, which made 35.9 percent of its shots (14-of-39), was led by Clarendon who had 13 points at the break.
Devyn Galland hit a 3-pointer, made a pair of free throws and then made a lay-up to cut the lead to 12 points, 48-36, with 11:19 remaining. But Cal made another surge -- behind baskets from Brandon, Boyd, Caldwell and Clarendon -- to go on a 19-0 run and take a 67-36 lead with 7:32 remaining.
Cal's largest lead of the game was 31 points, 67-36, with five minutes remaining.
Oregon (3-19, 1-9) returns to action next week with road games against Utah (Feb. 8) and Colorado (Feb. 10). The Ducks-Utes contest is set for 6 p.m. (PT) on Friday night, while the Oregon-Colorado contest is slated for Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
