LAS VEGAS - The No. 7 University of Oregon softball team (7-2) logged its second shutout of the season with its 4-0 shutout of Louisiana-Monroe (4-2) in Easton Desert Classic action Saturday morning.
In the teams' first-ever meeting, Duck freshman Cheridan Hawkins (1-1) struck out a team-season high 10 Warhawks, and allowed only one hit and one walk in six innings.
Sophomore Karissa Hovinga pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked none and allowed no hits in her fifth appearance of the season.
At the plate, three Ducks rapped multiple hits - sophomore center fielder Janie Takeda (2-for-3, 2B), freshman third baseman Danica Mercado (2-for-3, RBI) and junior catcher Alexa Peterson (2-for-3, 2 RBI).
Mercado knocked in UO's first run in the second inning with a single to right field, and drove in senior second baseman Kaylan Howard who opened the inning with a single.
In the third inning, junior first baseman Kailee Cuico and Mercado stroked singles, and scored on a single by junior catcher Alexa Peterson.
In the fifth inning, Takeda opened the inning with her team-leading third double of the season. Two batters later, she scored the Ducks' final run on a suicide squeeze bunt by Howard.
For ULM, starter Haylie Wilson (1-2) struck out three, walked one, gave up eight hits, and two of her four runs allowed were earned.
The Warhawks' lone hitter to hit safely - Kayla Prater - lined her double in the second inning after a walk.
Facing runners on second and third base with one out, Hawkins answered the challenge with a pair of strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Oregon caps second-day tourney action Saturday vs. No. 20 Hawai'i at 1:30 p.m., then takes on Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
