ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 10 University of Oregon softball team (19-3) stayed perfect in its second straight tourney, thanks to its 12-1 win over James Madison (9-6) in Sunday's Citrus Classic finale.

En route to its 12th straight win, UO's 15 hits and four homers tied its second-highest figures on the season behind its totals Sunday morning vs. No. 14 Michigan (17H, school record 6 HR).

The opposing Dukes receives votes in this week's national poll, but were held to two hits by Oregon freshman Cheridan Hawkins and sophomore Karissa Hovinga.

Hawkins (6-1) pitched the first 5.2 innings, struck out two, gave up two hits and one walk, and her run allowed was earned.

Hovinga finished her sixth game of the campaign, and in her 1.1 innings, struck out two, walked none and allowed no hits.

Redshirt freshman Alyssa Gillespie continued her offensive tear with a career-high 4-for-4 effort.

Two days earlier on Friday, the Hillsboro, Ore., product rapped her first three collegiate hits to open the weekend vs. a pair of NCAA vets - No. 11 LSU and Long Island.

Junior first baseman Kailee Cuico (2-for-4, RBI) and catcher Alexa Peterson (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBI, walk) and freshman Koral Costa (2-for-4, RBI) also collected multiple hits.

Among the team's other round-trippers, senior second baseman Kaylan Howard drilled her team-leading seventh homer of the season - a two-out, two-run shot - in the sixth inning, and Peterson, Lindvall and Sullivan hit their shots in the span of five at-bats in the seventh inning to chase JMU starter Jailyn Ford (5-1) from the game.

Ford pitched the opening 6.2 innings, struck out eight, walked one, yielded 15 hits, and nine of her 12 runs allowed were earned.

Facing only one batter, Heather Kiefer retired the other Duck out to end the top half of the seventh inning.

The Dukes' lone batters to hit safely - Ford and DP Megan Shinaberry - logged their double and single in the fifth inning to break up the no-hit attempt. The latter's bunt single scored their only run after a sacrifice bunt had moved Ford to third base the prior at-bat.

For the weekend, five Ducks topped .500 - Gillespie (.875, 7H, 2B, BB), junior shortstop Courtney Ceo (.632, 12H, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 4 SB), Peterson (.538, 7H, 2B, HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB), sophomore centerfielder Janie Takeda (.526, 10H, 2B, 6 RBI, BB, 2 SB) and sophomore first baseman Hannah Melick (.500, 2H, 2 BB).

Three other Ducks topped .400 - senior right fielder Samantha Pappas (.450, 9H, 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 3 BB, SB), Cuico (.450, 9H, 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, BB) and sophomore third baseman Jamie Rae Sullivan (.417, 5H, 2 HR, 5 RBI, BB).

On Duck all-time career lists this weekend, Pappas made climbs up the categories for homers (fifth, 34), runs (sixth, 123), hits (eighth, 196) and stolen bases (eighth-tied, 52).

Howard also improved to seventh on the homers chart (seventh, 32).

In the circle, Hawkins logged a 0.45 ERA in her 15.2 innings, struck out 29 batters, walked two, allowed four hits, and her one run allowed was earned.

UO's other two pitchers also logged sub 2.00 ERA's in their +10 innings - Hovinga (1.40, 1-0, 10.0 IP, 7 SO, 3 BB, 12 H) and Jessica Moore (1.70, 3-0, 12.1 IP, 10 SO, 2 BB, 11 H, .216 Opp BA).

Team-wise this weekend, Oregon had earlier beat No. 11 LSU (10-2, (5 innings)), Long Island (8-1), Boston College (8-0), Temple (11-4), No. 14 Michigan (13-4 (6)).

Looking ahead to next weekend, the Ducks travel to their fifth and final early season tournament - the Bayer Cropscience Classic, March 8-9, in Fresno, Calif.

UO will face San Diego State and Fresno State on Friday at 1:30 and 6 p.m. and Iowa State and St. Mary's on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The week after, Oregon opens its home slate with a doubleheader vs. New Mexico on Wednesday, March 13 at 2 p.m.
