WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – After historic series vs. Stanford and at Washington, Kailee Cuico and Cheridan Hawkins were rewarded with Pac-12 Player and Pitcher of the Week honors Monday.
Cuico, a junior first baseman from Carson, Calif., led the Ducks in home runs (3), RBI (6) and slugging (1.077) for the week's four games.
She tallied 3 RBI in the 10-3 finale over No. 15 Stanford - her second-highest total of the year. She logged a pair of two-hit games vs. No. 15 Washington, and multi-RBI games vs. both foes.
Her three round-trippers moved her to ninth all-time in Oregon history career-wise (29), and she leads the team this season in multi-RBI games (12), homers (10), RBI (34) and total bases (64).
Hawkins, a freshman left-handed pitcher from Anderson, Calif., claimed two of the team’s three wins, including a 10-3 victory over the Cardinal and a 4-2 decision over the Huskies.
In the finale over Stanford, she struck out four, walked none and allowed four hits in her five innings. She logged seven strikeouts vs. UW in her second-game win, and allowed only two hits and two walks in her second complete game of the campaign.
Overall for her three appearances, she led the team in wins (2), innings (14.0), strikeouts (11) and fewest walks (2).
Monday’s awards marked the 40th and 41st pitcher/player honors in school history, and 10th and 11th in head coach Mike White’s four-year tenure.
Among the current roster, senior outfielder Samantha Pappas and pitcher Jessica Moore are two-time recipients, and junior catcher Alexa Peterson and senior outfielder Allie Burger received similar nods in 2011 and ’10, respectively.
The duo also became the third same-week honorees since 2010 and fourth overall in school history.
Oregon took both player/pitcher honors twice before under White in 2011 (May 17 - Peterson/Brittany Rumfelt) and ’10 (March 29 –Pappas/ Moore), and also in 1999 (May 3 – Katie Mackey/Connie McMurren).
Off to a best-ever conference start for the second time under White (and third time ever), the Ducks (28-5, 5-1) won their first series (2-1) from the Super Regional Huskies since 2004.
UO's 12-1 win in the opener in Seattle was its highest run total and biggest victory margin in the series dating back to 1993.
Last Monday, UO capped its first sweep of the returning NCAA Regional finalist and No. 15 Stanford since 1995 with a 10-3 home victory (and took its third straight series vs. the Cardinal).
Looking ahead, No. 10 Oregon hosts Utah (14-16-1, 1-5) for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m., and the series finale on Wednesday, April 3 at 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday's finale was recently moved a half-hour earlier than the original schedule, due to travel considerations for Utah.
Tuesday's doubleheader is a Bi-Mart $2 Tuesday, and fans that show their Bi-Mart card will get $2 admission. Like all Duck softball doubleheaders in 2013, Tuesday's ticket prices are 2 games for the price of 1.
No. 10 Oregon then travels this weekend to fellow WCWS returnee and No. 4 California (27-3, 3-0) for three games on April 6-7. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a finale Sunday at noon.
