EUGENE, Ore. — No. 70 Oregon wrapped up the regular season with a 5-2 win over No. 58 Santa Clara in Eugene on Sunday afternoon.
The Ducks improved to 13-10 overall while the Broncos dropped to 9-9.
Oregon won the doubles point to start the day thanks to an 8-5 win by senior Julia Metzger and junior Pascale Neubert in the No. 2 match and another 8-5 triumph by sophomore Sofia Hager and freshman Brooke Hughes in the No. 3 slot. For Metzger and Neubert, it was their ninth win as a doubles pair this season (9-8 overall). The Ducks' 64th-ranked duo of Nicole Long and Patricia Skowronski fell in the No. 1 match, 8-4.
In singles play, wins by Lana Buttner (No. 6), Long (No. 1) and Skowronski (No. 2) locked up the match for the Ducks. For Skowronski, the win capped her final regular season match with a victory. Then, Metzger won her final singles match in Eugene with a 6-3, 7-6 (8) win in the No. 3 match.
"I thought we played well as a team from top to bottom which we needed to do today," said head coach Paul Reber. "Santa Clara beat us in a tight 4-3, down to the last match dual last year so it was nice to get this one. A big hats off to our two seniors, Julia and Patze, who were the ones we looked to to close things out down the stretch. It was definitely a good way to finish the regular season. Now we need to focus on PAC-12 next week."
The Ducks wrap up the regular season with 13 wins, the most under Reber. Oregon heads to the Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif., on Wednesday (April 24).
