EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon women’s soccer team will host rival Oregon State this Saturday at 5 p.m. (PT) at Pape’ Field in Eugene. It is the third of UO’s five spring exhibition matches. The event is free and open to the public.
The soccer match will be part of a trio of Oregon Athletics events held on Saturday. Oregon’s Spring Football Game is at Autzen Stadium with an 11 a.m. start time. The Ducks’ nationally-ranked baseball team will host Stanford at 2 p.m. in PK Park.
“I think the team is progressing nicely,” first-year head coach Kat Mertz said of the Ducks this spring. “I like the team’s work ethic. We’re making progress on the mentality side of things. The players are stepping up and it’s nice to see people enjoying practice, working hard and playing for each other.”
Oregon opened the exhibition season on April 6 with a 7-1 home win over Southern Oregon. The Ducks dropped their most recent outing on April 21, a 1-0 loss at Pac-12 foe Washington.
“We are putting together a new system,” Mertz said. “We’ve been focusing on some defending principles and getting our team organized. The next couple of weeks we are going to be moving forward on the attacking side of things.”
Six different Ducks have scored goals this exhibition season. Sophomore Maryn Beutler leads the team with two goals. Junior Kiyomi Cook and sophomores Kristen Parr, Brooke Strawn, Kira Wagoner and Cara Wegner have each scored one goal.
“I want to see us be a little more committed in the final third,” Mertz said. “I’d like to see us take some risks. Take people on when we need to. Create some chances and just look for any opportunity to challenge the goalkeeper.”
Oregon will play a road match against Portland State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, before closing the exhibition calendar with a neutral-site contest against UC Davis on Saturday, May 11. The UO-UC Davis match is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be played at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore.
UO returns 23 players, including seven starters, from last year’s squad which finished the regular-season 8-10-2 overall and 3-7-1 in Pac-12 Conference action.
