EUGENE – Sporting a truly impressive resume as a student and athlete, University of Oregon junior Alexa Peterson was chosen as a Capital One Softball Academic All-American Thursday.

The communication disorders and sciences major picked up her first national honor thanks to her 3.41 cumulative GPA, and was one of 11 players honored to the national first team.

Two other Pac-12 players were also chosen to the same squad – Arizona State’s Sam Parlich and Bailey Wigness.

On the field, the designated player and catcher led the Pac-12 this week in batting (.453) and on-base percentage (.557) and stood second in slugging (.844). Nationally, she also ranked top 20 in on-base percentage (seventh), batting (12th) and slugging (14th).

The All-Pac-12 and All-Region First-Team selection is the fourth Duck to receive an Academic All-America honor with Kristi Leiter (2005, first team), Kim Manning (1991, first team) and Susan Voeller (second team, 1988).

Thursday’s honor was based on a vote by college sports information directors, and recipients must be a sophomore or older, a team returnee (ie not a transfer), sport a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and played in at least half of the team’s games this season.

More information on the program is available at the website at the URL address.

A month ago, she picked up her second Academic All-District honor, sixth in school history, and third in Mike White’s four-year tenure.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the #3 seed and Pac-12 champion Ducks (49-9) welcome #14 seed Nebraska (43-13) for the first NCAA Super Regional to be hosted at Howe Field.

Saturday’s opener is set for a 5 p.m. start. Sunday’s action resumes at noon, and a would-be third game in the best-of-three series would follow at 3 p.m.

Every Duck-Husker game will be televised live by ESPNU, and more event info is available at the URL address.
