COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of Oregon middle blocker Canace Finley and libero Amanda Benson look ahead to the FIVB U-21 World Championship next week in the cities of Brno and Prostejov, Czech Repbulic, June 21-30.
The sophomore-to-be Finley and freshman-to-be Benson were among 12 players that left Wednesday from a training camp in Lake Placid, N.Y., and were selected based on their performance at a tryout camp at the Olympic Training Center in February.
The duo are among seven players on the squad from the Pac-12 with Stanford outside hitters Jordan Burgess and Brittany Howard, middle blocker Merete Lutz and setter Kelsey Humphreys, and Colorado setter Nicole Edelman.
More information on the USA squad is the www.usavolleyball.org website, and tournament information is available at the http://www.fivb.org/EN/volleyball/competitions/U20/2013/ website.
Last fall, the Fort Collins, Colo.native Finley started 28 of Oregon's 35 matches at middle blocker, and paced the team in blocks per set average (0.77 p/s) for the season. The team leader in blocks in 11 matches, she logged a team-season high six blocks in the four-set NCAA semifinal win over No.1 Penn State, and three-set win at Portland State.
Benson was an Under Armour All-America pick and Arizona state prep player of the year last fall. Also last year, she helped the U.S. Junior National Team win the gold medal in the 2012 NORCECA Games in Nicaragua.
Looking ahead to later this summer, the Duck duo will open fall practice under ninth-year head coach Jim Moore in early August.
Last year, Finley helped Oregon post NCAA and Pac-12 runner-up finishes en route to a 30-5 overall mark, and a year-end No. 2 national ranking.
