EUGENE, Ore. – In their final tune-up before the regular season, Oregon volleyball will host its second exhibition match against a team of Oregon Alumni at Matt Knight Arena, Friday at 7 p.m.
The alumni roster is highlighted by 2012 AVCA National Player of the Year Alaina Bergsma. Bergsma will be one of three members of the 2012 national runner-up team that will be returning for joining Haley Jacob and Kellie Kawasaki. But just because the alumni have left Oregon, does not mean they have left the playing court.
Bergsma competed in Puerto Rico after graduating last year and is currently training with USA Volleyball. Jacob went overseas to play Switzerland in her first year as a professional.
Six of last year’s starting seven will be reunited on the floor, Friday with the four competing in the current Duck lineup including a pair of All-Americans in Liz Brenner and Lauren Plum along with senior middle blocker Ariana Williams and converted outside hitter Canace Finley.
While the foursome looks to be a stable part of the lineup in the early-going, one spot for fans to watch is the libero position which head coach Jim Moore has described as “open competition.”
Junior Natalie Bookout Gonzalez and sophomore Tatum Norton each enter the season with a high-level collegiate experience under their belts, playing 22 and 27 matches in 2012, respectively. But freshman Amanda Benson has an impressive resume at the youth level and hopes to hit the ground running in Eugene. Benson played for the Junior National Team which won the gold medal in the 2012 NORCECA Games, and was named a PrepVolleyball Senior Ace.
Friday’s match will be exactly one week prior to the regular-season home-opener against Eastern Washington, Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. which is part of the Oregon Classic. Admission is free as well as parking in the Matthew Knight Arena Garage.
