EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon women’s soccer team signed 11 standouts to National Letters of Intent, head coach Kat Mertz announced Wednesday. 

Kerri Cook (Gresham, Ore.), Holla Hinriksdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland), Abby King (Oak Park, Calif.), Jordan Fleming (Las Vegas, Nev.), Zoe Higgins (Sandy, Ore.), Abby Morrow (Bothell, Wash.), Michelle Rockey (West Hills, Calif.), Miranda Schulz (Temecula, Calif.), Marlo Sweatman (Florida State), Brooke Tasker (Aurora, Colo.) and Madison Wiegand-Brown (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will join the Oregon soccer program next season.

Mertz’s signing class consists of five defenders, four midfielders, one forward and a goalkeeper. Three recruits hail from California, two from Colorado and Oregon, and one each from Washington, Nevada, Virginia and Iceland.

The talented signing class will join Oregon in Mertz’s second year at the helm following last season’s 4-12-3 campaign.

“Our staff is excited to bring in such a talented signing class,” said Mertz. “I’m looking forward to seeing the dedication and commitment these girls have to build a championship program here. They will bring depth at all positions and can lead us to our goals of winning a Pac-12 title.”


Miranda Schulz
Midfielder / 5-foot-10 / Temecula, Calif. (Great Oak HS) / Slammers FC

About Schulz: Four-year starter and letter winner at Great Oaks High School … led Great Oaks to three-straight CIF Southwestern League Championships (2011-13) and two CIF Southern Section semifinal appearances (2012-13) … named team captain as a senior … tallied 18 goals and 10 assists as a junior, leading the team in both categories … named second team All-CIF Southwestern League in 2013 … member of Slammers FC club team … led club team to three-straight USFF Futsal National Championships (2011-13) … competed in the finals of the ECNL U16 National Championships … led Slammers FC to a runner-up showing at the 2012 Surf Cup … four-year Scholar Athlete and winner of the University of Oregon’s Summit Scholarship … daughter of Ed and Dylan Schulz … has one brother, Zach.

Coach Mertz on Schulz: ­­­“Miranda has a great presence on the field. Her vision and technical ability with the ball will lead to many of our attacking threats. A great team player, Miranda will see time up top and in the midfield.”


Jordan Fleming
Defender / 5-foot-0 / Las Vegas, Nev. (Palo Verde HS) / Heat FC

About Fleming: Two-year letter winner at Palo Verde High School, playing on the back line or in the midfield … led team to consecutive Northwest Division championships in 2011-12 … scored five goals with six assists during 2010-11 season … registered seven goals and six assists in 2011-12 season … named team’s defensive MVP …  All-Sunset Region selection … competed for Heat FC soccer club, helping the club win five Nevada state championships … led Heat FC to the 2012 ECNL National Championship finals match … named a Scholar Athlete at Palo Verde … daughter of Bobby and Shelly Fleming.

Coach Mertz on Fleming: “Jordan is a talented left back that will be a great attacking threat for us in the Pac-12. We are looking forward to her pace, ability to get into the final third and being dangerous in attack.”


Zoe Higgins
Forward / 5-foot-3 / Sandy, Oregon (Sandy HS) / Oregon Rush

About Higgins: Three-year letter winner at Sandy High School … collected first team All-Northwest Champions League honors in 2011 and 2012 seasons … competed for the Oregon Rush from 2010-13, leading them to consecutive state championships … member of Crossfire U18 ECNL team (2013-14) … 2010 and 2011 U.S. Soccer Training Center Invitee … member of the 2012 National ODP Development Camp … member of the Oregon ODP team (2007-12) … led ODP team to a Region IV Championship in 2010 and was named to the all-Region IV team in three seasons … letter winner in track and field … qualified for the state championship in the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays and in the 800 … daughter of Bryan Higgins III and Tonja Gleason … has two older sisters, Samantha and Iris.

Coach Mertz on Higgins: “Zoe will be a great addition to our front line. Her work rate on and off the ball will cause a lot of trouble for the opponents.”


Abby Morrow
Midfielder / 5-goot-8 / Bothell, Wash. (Inglemoor HS) / Eastside FC

About Morrow: Three-year letter winner at Inglemoore High School … three-time first team All-Kingco selection (2011-13) … voted team MVP in 2011 and 2013 … selected team captain as a junior and senior … led team to a fourth place finish in the state championship, tallying the second-most goals and assists in the conference … member of the Northwest Nationals (2006-09) and Eastside FC (2010-12) club soccer teams … led Eastside FC to the 2013 state championship,  semifinals of the 2012 Region IV championships and the finals of the 2011 Surf Cup … member of the 2013-14 Crossfire ECNL team … member of the Oregon ODP team (2009-12) and was named team captain … named to the All-Tournament first team of the ODP Region IV Championships … selected to the 2012 National Development Camp … Scholar Athlete, Honor’s Society member and winner of the Kingco Academic Award … one-year letter winner in basketball … daughter of Joe and Teresa Morrow … has two older brothers, Alex and A.J.

Coach Mertz on Morrow: “We are looking forward to Abby’s ability to play-make in the midfield. Her ability to keep and maintain possession while penetrating the attack will be a great addition to our team.”


Michelle Rockey
Defender / 5-foot-6 / West Hills, Calif. (Notre Dame HS) / Real So Cal

About Rockey: Four-year starter and letter winner at Notre Dame High School … two-time All-Mission league second team selection … two-time team captain (2013-14) … defensive MVP as a sophomore and junior … member of Real So Cal club team (2006-14) … led club team to ECNL National Championship Flight B title in 2012 and a Surf Cup Championship in 2013 … club team is currently ranked No. 2 in the ECNL and third in the nation by topdrawersoccer.com … four-time Magna Cum Laude at Notre Dame HS … daughter of Jay and Theresa Rockey.

Coach Mertz on Rockey: “Michelle is a solid and smart center back. Her leadership and ability to organize her teammates will aid in our team defending.”


Brooke Tasker
Midfielder/ 5-foot-6 / Aurora, Colo. (Grandview HS) / Real Colorado

About Tasker: Two-year letter winner for Grandview High School … second team All-Centennial League selection in 2013 … named to Aurora 2013 All-City team … Colorado ODP team member from 2010-11 … member of Real Colorado club team for one season and Colorado Storm for six seasons … four-time team captain of her club team … led the Colorado State Cup in scoring in 2010 and is a two-time tournament MVP … regional ECNL camp invitee to Denver in 2012 and Las Vegas in 2013 … daughter of Jeffery and Kendra Tasker.

Coach Mertz on Tasker: “Brooke’s attacking flare will be a great addition to our team. She is creative and savvy on the ball, and is a hard worker.”


Madison Wiegand-Brown
Defender / 5-foot-4 / Colorado Springs, Colo. (William J. Palmer HS) / Pride Soccer Club

About Wiegand-Brown: Played one year of soccer at William J. Palmer High School before focusing on club soccer … member of Pride Soccer Club from 2007-2014 … 2012 club season featured a State Cup Championship, U16 Super League Championship, finalists at the Far West Regionals and quarterfinalists at the Surf Cup … also won the State Cup Championship in 2013 … helped Pride Soccer Club advance to the 2014 Disney Showcase championship match … member of the ODP National Development Camp … member of the 2010 and 2012 ODP Region IV Camp … one-year letter winner in cross country and a four-year letter winner in track … Student Council Treasurer and member of the National Honors Society … daughter of Sandy Wiegand and Rich Horner … has one sister, Maia.

Coach Mertz on Wiegand-Brown: “Also known as Mad Dog, she is a pacey, hard-nose defender who will help us either as an outside or center back. We are looking forward to her tenacity on the back line.”


Halla Hinriksdóttir 
Goalkeeper / 5-foot-7 / Reykjavik, Iceland (The Commercial College) / Breiðablik

About Hinriksdóttir: Product of the Icelandic Youth Women’s National Team hailing from Reykjavik, Iceland … starter in every one of Iceland’s UEFA Women’s U19 games … led Iceland to shutouts over Slovakia and Moldova to advance past the UEFA U19 opening qualifying round … registered a 1-0 shutout against Portugal in the second qualifying round … started two games for Iceland in a friendly tournament in La Manga, Spain … has been called in for all of Iceland’s U19 training camps the past two years … recently joinedBreiðablik, a club team based in Kopavogur ... won every game in the 2014 FM Tournament with ... Breiðablik ... competed for Afturelding club team from 2005-13 … named Afturelding’s most promising player by coaches and players’ vote in 2012 … named the starting GK for the Afturelding Women’s Team in the Borgunar Cup … led Afturelding to a second place finish in the 2012 Indoor Tournament and the Lengjubikar Tournament … started in seven games in the 2012 Pepsi League for the Afturelding Women’s Team … was the starting GK for the Afturelding U19 team in 2011 and the U16 team in 2010 … led the Afturleding U19 team to a second place showing in the 2011 National Tournament, staring in all games … made her first start for the Afturelding Women’s Team in 2009 … has attended prep school at The Commercial College of Iceland since 2010 … was a taekwondo national champion in 2006.

Marlo Sweatman
Midfielder / 5-foot-8 / Herndon, Va. (Florida State) / McLean ECNL ‘94

About Sweatman: Will be eligible to play next season as a sophomore after opening her collegiate career with Florida State … appeared in six matches in her rookie season as the Seminoles posted a 22-2-3 record and reached the finals of the 2013 Women’s College Cup … made her collegiate debut against Auburn, tallying a season-high 14 minutes … saw action vs. Miami and Pittsburg in ACC competition … played in two NCAA Tournament games (South Alabama, Colorado) …  member of the Jamaican U-20 National Team, serving as a starter and captain in the midfield in every match in 2012 … played in the CONCACAF U-20 World Cup qualifier … scored twice for the Jamaican squad in the Caribbean Cup … called into camp with the U-18 U.S. National Team in 2012 … was a four-time MVP an All-ISL first team selection and a three-time captain of her Flint Hill High School team … led high school team in assists and scoring in all four years … member of the McLean ECNL ’94 club team … named to the All-Tournament team at Disney and PDA … daughter of Edward and Beverly Sweatman .. has an older sister and two older brothers.

Coach Mertz on Sweatman: “Like Halla (Hinriksdóttir), Marlo is bringing a lot of international experience to the team. Marlo is a captain for her Jamaican team and also has experience playing ACC soccer with Florida State. We’re excited to have her join the program.”


Abby King
Defender / 5-foot-6 / Oak Park, Cali. (Oaks Christian) / Eagles Soccer Club

About King: Three-year letter winner at Oaks Christian School … three-time all-conference selection, earning Tri-Valley first team honors as a freshman and junior and second-team honors as a sophomore … helped team to a 12-0-0 conference record, winning the 2013 Tri-Valley Conference … reached the quarterfinals of the 2013 Division III CIF Southern Section Championships … four-year letter winner in track, competing in the 100, 200 and 400 meter relays … competed on the Eagles Soccer Club (2010-14) … led club team to the semifinals of the 2012 National Cup … participant in the 2012 Southern California id2 camp … daughter of Mark and Jamie King.

Coach Mertz on King: “We are looking forward to Abby’s athleticism on the flank. She is an aggressive defender who also likes to attack.”


Kerri Cook
Defender / 5-foot-5 / Gresham, Ore. (Sam Barlow High School) / THUSC Sodium

About Cook: Two-year letter winner at Sam Barlow High School … older sister, Kiyomi, is a junior on the team … led team to a Mount Hood Conference title in 2012 and 2014 … a first team All-State and All-Mount Hood Conference selection … named conference’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior … earned team’s MVP award in 2013 … former member of the Eastside Timbers club team … current member of the THUSC Sodium club team ... led club team to consecutive State Cup runner-up finishes before winning the State Cup championship in 2013 … also won the 2012 Surf Cup while reaching the finals of the 2013 NPL Champions Cup … attended a 2013 summer ECNL / id2 camp … also was a letter winner on the Barlow track and field team, winning the conference championship in 2012 … daughter of Karl and Carol.

Coach Mertz on Cook: “We’re excited to bring another Cook into the program.  Kerri is a talented defender that will give us quality depth at that position.”
