EUGENE, Ore. – No. 25 Oregon scored four runs in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and that was all Tommy Thorpe would need in leading the Ducks to a 7-2 win over UC Riverside on Friday in game one of a non-conference series at PK Park.
Tyler Baumgartner sliced a bases-loaded three-run double to left-center field with two outs to give UO a 3-0 lead after UCR starter Jacob Smigelski hit Desmond Santos and Mark Karaviotis and walked A.J. Balta. Kyle Garlick added a RBI single off second baseman Joe Chavez’s glove to score Baumgartner with the fourth run.
Thorpe (5-3) picked up the win with another solid night on the mound. The Ducks’ lefty allowed one unearned run on just two hits while striking out seven and walking one in seven innings.
The Highlanders (14-15) scored their first run in the fifth inning on a one-out ground out by Matthew Ellis after an Oregon error, a base hit and a sacrifice bunt moved a runner to third.
Garlick got Oregon (25-10) the run back in the sixth when he blasted his third home run of the season over the wall in left field. UO added runs in the seventh and eighth to push the lead to 8-1 before UCR’s David Andriese hit a solo homer in the ninth.
Oregon’s last two runs came on a Baumgartner double in the seventh and an Austin Grebeck RBI single in the eighth.
Garlick led the Ducks going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Baumgartner was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Grebeck added two hits in four at bats and drove in a run.
Oregon and UC Riverside will meet in game two of the series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
