TEMPE, Ariz. – Oregon scored four runs in the top of the first inning but Arizona State responded with nine unanswered runs in a 9-4 Sun Devils’ win in a Pac-12 Conference game on Saturday night at Packard Stadium.
Kyle Garlick hit a three-run home run in the first to give Oregon a 4-0 lead, but the Sun Devils answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and four more in the second inning to take the lead. Arizona State (25-21, 13-10 Pac-12) added single runs in the third and fourth inning and then cruised to the win behind ASU starter Ryan Kellogg (7-2). The Sun Devils’ lefty held the Ducks (36-15, 14-9 Pac-12) scoreless over the final eight innings. He finished the game allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out 12.
Jeff Gold (9-1) lasted just 2.2 innings while giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits. The Ducks committed three errors, including two in the second inning that led to four unearned runs.
Garlick finished 2-for-4, including his fourth home run and a double, with three RBI and a run scored. Mitchell Tolman went 1-for-3 with a RBI, while Shaun Chase, Josh Graham, A.J. Balta, Nick Catalano and Mark Karaviotis each had one hit. Johnny Sewald went 4-for-4 with three runs scored to lead ASU.
Oregon and Arizona State meet in the rubber match of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
