Casey Martin capped one of the sport’s most memorable comebacks of 2012 by shooting a five-over 75 Friday in second-round action of the 112th edition of the U.S. Open, held at the Olympic Club.SAN FRANCISCO – University of Oregon men’s golf coach
The Eugene native and sixth-year Duck head mentor missed the cut for the weekend’s final two rounds by one stroke with his nine-over, two-round score (74-75-149) on the par-70 course.
Martin began his Friday round at 7 a.m. on the 10th hole, and stood all even on the back nine. He logged seven par scores (#10, 12, 14-18), one birdie on the par-four 11th, and one bogey on the par-three 13th.
On the front nine, he carded four par scores (#2, 3, 6, 7) and five bogeys on the remaining holes to end with a five-over 75.
In his first serious golf event in six years, he posted a 297-yard driving average, and his 58 putts gave him a 1.61 average on the greens in the event billed as ‘Golf’s Toughest Test’.
Former Duck and PGA golfer Ben Crane (77-73-150) finished another stroke back at 10-over.
Overall, Jim Furyk (70-69), David Toms (69-70) and Tiger Woods (69-70) topped the individual leaderboard at the halfway point.
First-day leader Michael Thompson (66-75) and three players followed in a tie for fourth place with one-over scores of 140.

Looking ahead, action continues for 72 players with Saturday’s third round, while action concludes with Sunday’s final round.
Martin earned his bid via his win in the area U.S. Open Championship qualifier at the Emerald Valley Golf Club two weeks ago. He shot a four-under score (69-69-138) in the single-day event to earn two of the 58 spots awarded nationally.
Tuesday marked the second U.S. Open appearance for Martin who also played in the 1998 event and tied for 23rd (74-71-74-72-291). That event was also held at the Olympic Club and won by Lee Janzen by one stroke, thanks to his four-round, even 280 score (73-66-73-68)).
