CRESWELL, Ore. – University of Oregon sophomore Brandon Baumgarten became the fourth Duck to qualify for this year’s U.S. Amateur, held at the Atlantic Athletic Club (Highlands Course) in Johns Creek, Ga., on Aug. 11-17.
The Granite Bay, Calif., product shot even par on the day to finish with a final card of 68-76—144 at Emerald Valley Golf Course, tying him for second.
Baumgarten was the clubhouse leader after the first round with a 4-under 68 thanks to his five birdies and just one bogey. The second round however was a complete opposite to that of his first round with six bogeys to just two birdies.
However, Baumgarten was able hold off three other golfers who were right on his tail, that were at 1-over par, including Oregon State’s David Fink.
Zach Foushee, Noah Sheikh, Max Carter and Sulman Raza were also qualifying today at EVGC. Foushee, just couldn’t find his groove the entire day, ending with a 5-over 149 card while Sheikh posted a 7-over 151. Carter continues to find his swing as the junior finished with a 12-over 156. Raza shot a 79 in the first round before being disqualified in the second round of play.
Baumgarten played in seven tournaments this past season for UO, posting a 74.67 stroke average. His best finish of the year came at the Duck Invitational where he tied for third.
