NEW ORLEANS, La.- The 20th ranked University of Oregon women’s golf team started off strong at the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, finishing in second place after the first round. The Ducks six-over 294, finished one shot behind leader No.4 USC 5-over 293 at the English Turn Golf & Country Club.
Weather played a huge favor in today’s event, with temperatures in the mid-50’s, but overcast skies and a chilly wind lasted throughout the day. On the par 72, 7,078-yard course, freshman Cali Hipp finished in first place, recording her best round as a collegian with a three-under 69. This is her second time recording an under-par round and third time leading the Ducks.
“I would say that today even with the wind I kept a positive attitude and didn’t let my poor shots affect my play,” Hipp said. “I’m looking forward to round two.”
Fellow freshman Cassy Isagawa finished in a second-place tie at one-under 71 after the first round. This marked the Wailuku, Hawai’i native’s sixth under-par round this season.
“Today I felt alright about the way I played,” Isagawa said. “I could have played better, but I am content about today’s round because it is only the first day and there are two more days ahead of us.”
Also competing for UO were sophomore Raphaela Dyer, who finished in a tie for 35th at four-over 76 and senior Ashley Edwards tied for 57th at six-over 78. Freshman Monica Petchakan also made the trip, finishing at 14-over 86.
In the team standings, USC finished in first and one shot behind the second-place Ducks was No.13 Duke (seven-over 295). No. 17 Colorado and No. 19 Baylor finished in a fourth-place tie at nine-over 297.
“I think for our team to win we really need to just grind it out when we are playing and keep playing strong like we did today,” Isagawa said. “I know no one gave up out there and all of us stayed positive.”
In the individual standings, Hipp sits atop the leaderboard alone, two shots ahead of teammate Isagawa, Tulsa’s Marita Engzelius, Colorado’s Alex Stewart and USC’s Lisa McCloskey, who are tied for second-place at one-over 71.
