Ducks Polish Off Impressive Summer Scorecard

EUGENE – The University of Oregon women’s golf team extended its successful 2011-12 campaign into the summer, thanks to a host of impressive accomplishments from its youth-laden team.

In mid-July, All-America sophomore Cassy Isagawa won the HSWGA Match Play Championship at the Oaho Country Club after she entered the event seeded third. She opened with wins over Mira Hann (7&6) and Ka’Ili Britos (7&5), then topped Kacie Komoto (4&3) in the semifinal and Lisa Kang in the final (5&4).

Two weeks later, the Wailuku product Isagawa finished second in the Hawai’i Stroke Play Championship (70-73-69-212), and was only two strokes behind the champion Nicole Sakamoto (75-68-67-210). Isagawa carded the third- and fourth-best rounds of the event in the finale and opener, while Sakamoto’s final two rounds were the best of the tournament.

Sophomore Cali Hipp won the U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier at the Woodburn Course in mid-July with her single-round 71, and topped the field by one stroke.

In the national championship in August, the Caldwell, Idaho native tied for 89th in qualifying (78-76-154 (+10) - five strokes from the cut that advanced to match play. She finished with one birdie in each round (1st - #11; 2nd - #15), 22 par scores (10/12), and 12 bogeys (7/5) in her 36 holes of action at the Cleveland, Ohio event hosted by The Country Club, August 6-12.

Freshman and Eugene product Caroline Inglis (72-69-141) continued to add honors to her already-crowded resume in August with an appearance in the U.S. Public Links Championship. She tied for 54th in stroke play action (72-76-148), 11 strokes back of the leader. In her round of 64 match play opener, she lost 6&5 to eventual quarterfinalist Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y.

In June, Inglis staked a runner-up finish in the OGA Stroke Play Championship at the Rose City Golf Course. In the 36-hole event, she carded one eagle, nine birdies, 19 par scores, six bogeys and one double-bogey to end two strokes behind Brie Stone of Veneta (70-69-139).

In July, she placed fourth (69-72-72-213) in the AJGA Junior at Centennial in Medford, Ore., and was only nine strokes shy of the victor Bethany Wu (67-68-69-204). Inglis ended with eight birdies in the 54-hole event, to go along with 41 par scores, four bogeys and one double-bogey

Also in June, sophomore Monica Petchakan finished two strokes behind Inglis for the final U.S. Public Links qualifying spot at the area qualifier at the Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City. The Encino, Calif., native Petchakan shot a 76, while Inglis (third, 74) was two strokes behind the top finisher – Hannah Basalone (72).

In late May, senior Hanuel Seo – a Duck newcomer and transfer from Penn State – won the U.S. Public Links Qualifier in Waterloo, Ill., on the Annbriar Golf Course (70) by two strokes. In the national finale in Cleveland, she tied for 76th overall (75-76-151), and missed the cut for the match play bracket by only two strokes. In her opening two rounds at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in New Jersey, she shot five birdies, 20 pars and 10 bogeys and one double-bogey.

Looking ahead, UO opens its fall campaign - the fourth under head coach Ria Scott - in the Topy Cup at the Tanagura Country Club in Japan September 11-13.

UO has three more fall events afterwards – the Madon Rudolph Invitational (Sept. 21-23, Nashville, Tenn.), the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational (Oct. 8-10, Sammamish, Wash.) and Stanford Intercollegiate (Stanford, Calif., Oct. 19-21).
