AUBURN, Wash. – Chasing its eighth NCAA bid in school history, the No. 34 University of Oregon women’s golf team ended the first day of the NCAA West Regional in sixth place – five places better than its pre-tourney seeding.

UO shot a 14-over score of 302 in the first of the tourney's three rounds, with the top eight teams after Saturday's finale advancing to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

No. 1 USC led the 24-team field by two strokes, and was followed in the top five by No. 6 Virginia (second, 290), No. 13 Tennessee (third, 292), No. 23 UC Davis (fourth, 300) and No. 27 Texas A&M (fifth, 301).

Other teams in the top 10 behind UO included No. 7 Arizona (seventh-tie, 303), No. 36 South Carolina (seventh-tie, 303), No. 51 BYU (seventh-tie, 303), No. 15 Iowa State (10th-tie, 304) and No. 38 Washington (10th-tie, 304).

The Ducks were led by junior Ashley Edwards (17th-tie, 74) who shot the best score of her seven career rounds in regional play by one stroke. The Oakley, Calif., native led UO for the second time this spring, fifth time in 2010-11 and 13th time career-wise.

On her scorecard, she opened with a birdie on the par-four 10th, then added birdies on the par-5 first, and par-4 third, seventh and 10th holes. She ended with nine par scores, four bogeys and one double-bogey.

UO also counted scores from seniors Kendra Little (26th-tie, 75) and Erica Omlid (43rd-tie, 76) and freshman Raphaela Dyer (54th-tie, 77), while sophomore Cheyenne Hickle (94th-tie, 81) rounded out the Duck unit.

Edwards’ four birdies was the team’s high on the day, and Dyer, Little and Omlid all added single birdies on the sixth, fourth and 12th holes, respectively.

Overall in the individual standings, Tennessee’s Erica Popson held a one-stroke lead with her four-under 68 over USC’s Sopha Popov and UC Davis’ Demi Runas who followed one stroke back in second place with three-under 69’s.

Looking ahead, UO returns for second- and third-round action on Friday-Saturday, May 6-7 at the Washington National Golf Course. Players will start teeing off the par-72, 6,321-yard course on holes 1 and 10 each day at 8 am. (with the last tee time at 2:10 p.m.).
