AUBURN, Wash. – Chasing its eighth NCAA bid in school history, the No. 34 University of Oregon women’s golf team capped second-day action in the NCAA West Regional tied for eighth place – three places better than its pre-tourney seeding.
UO (302-301-603) shot a 13-over score of 301 Friday – one stroke better than its opening score Thursday – in its attempt to finish top eight after Saturday's finale and advance to the NCAA Championships.
Overall on the team leaderboard, No. 1 USC (288-284-572) led the 24-team field by seven strokes. No. 13 Tennessee moved up a place into second place (292-287-579), and the top five was rounded out by No. 6 Virginia (third, 290-301-591), No. 23 UC Davis (fourth, 300-292-592) and No. 7 Arizona (fifth, 303-293-596).
No. 38 Washington (sixth, 304-294-598) and No. 36 South Carolina (seventh, 303-299-602) passed UO Friday, and Oregon was tied for eighth place with No. 27 Texas A&M (301-302-603).
The Ducks were led Friday by senior Erica Omlid (27th-tie, 76-73-149) who carded the team’s best round of the tourney so far, and was tied in the overall standings with senior Kendra Little (27th-tie, 75-74-149).
Junior Ashley Edwards followed in a tie for 34th place (74-76-150), and was followed by sophomore Cheyenne Hickle (89th-tie, 81-78-159) and freshman Raphaela Dyer (105th-t, 77-85-162).
Omlid led UO for the sixth time this season and 11th time in career, and her one-over 73 tied her sixth-best score among her 23 rounds in 2010-11.
The Springfield, Ore., native Omlid turned in two birdies Friday on the par-5 fourth and par-3 eighth holes, added par scores on 14 holes, and also ended with one bogey and one double-bogey.
Hickle and Little also scored birdies on the par-3 fifth and par-4 12th holes, respectively.
Overall in the individual standings, Tennessee’s Erica Popson (68-69-137) added two strokes to her lead. USC’s Lizette Salas (73-67-140) stood second after she posted Friday’s second-best round and improved seven places in the process.
Looking ahead, UO returns for third and final-round action on Saturday, May 7 at the Washington National Golf Course. Players will start teeing off the par-72, 6,321-yard course on holes 1 and 10 each day at 8 am. (with the last tee time at 2:10 p.m.).

Play will be hosted simultaneously the next two days in the NCAA Central and East Regionals by Notre Dame at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., and by Stetson at the LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
In two weeks, the low eight team finishers and low two individuals not on those teams from each regional begin play in the NCAA Championships, hosted by the Traditions Golf Club in College Station, Texas, Tuesday-Saturday, May 17-20.
