Hipp Tops Ducks in Golfweek Challenge Finale

VAIL, Colo. – The University of Oregon women’s golf team capped action in its season opener, the Golfweek Conference Challenge, tied for fifth place Wednesday on the Red Sky Fazio Course.

Oregon (297-304-307-908) finished nine strokes behind the event champion, Oklahoma (first, 301-307-291-899), in the 18-team field that and eight squads ranked top 40 at the end of last season.

UC Davis followed five strokes back in second place (second, 294-313-297-904) and was one of four teams from last year’s NCAA Championships on hand with Coastal Carolina (ninth-tie, 297-313-307-917), Notre Dame (ninth-tie, 302-311-304-917) and Minnesota (16th, 302-324-312-938).

Other top-five teams from Wednesday’s final results included Tulsa (third, 305-305-296-906), Pepperdine (fourth, 300-306-301-907) and Ole Miss (fifth-tie, 300-306-302-908).

UO was led by its third different player in as many rounds as freshman Cali Hipp shot the best round of her young collegiate career (43rd-tie, 76-82-75-233), and was stroke better in the final round than sophomore Raphaela Dyer (89th, 76-NS-76).

On Wednesday, Hipp ended with three birdies (#7, 9, 18), 10 par scores (#1-2, 4-6, 11, 13, 15-17), four bogeys (#3, 8, 12, 14) and one double-bogey (#10). Dyer carded two birdies (#2, 14), 11 par scores (#3-7, 9, 12-13, 15-16, 18), four bogeys (#8, 10-11, 17) and one double-bogey (#1).

In the overall standings, fellow frosh Cassy Isagawa (11th-tie, 77-71-77-225) led the squad and was one of three Ducks in the top 30 with senior Ashley Edwards (21st-tie, 73-76-79-228) and junior Cheyenne Hickle (27th-tie, 72-75-82-229).
On the par 72, 6,405-yard course, Hickle (9) ended with nine birdies and two eagles over the course of 72 holes, and other birdie counts follow: Isagawa (8 birdies, 1 eagle), Hipp (7), Dyer (6) and Edwards (5).

Overall in the individual standings, Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma (70-75-145) climbed two places Wednesday to win by three strokes over  Natalie Gleadall of Ole Miss (second-tie, 69-74-77-220), Kristina Merkle of Tulsa (second-tie, 79-70-71-220) and Grace Na of Pepperdine (second-tie, 69-74-77-220).
