Each month O Heroes sits down with one male student-athlete and one female student-athlete to get to know them better off the field. February’s Female Hero of the Month is Monica Petchakan, a junior on the Oregon women’s golf team.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Calif., Petchakan’s athletic talents shined on the course when she starting playing golf at just 10-years-old.

As a role model for the kids of the Eugene/Springfield community, Petchakan has been actively involved in various O Heroes events.

Over the past school year she has volunteered at Special Olympics bowling, Special Olympics golf, Duckling Days, the Boys & Girls Club of Emerald Valley Olympics, Duck into a Book, Feeding the Homeless, and First Tee Golf.

Notably, Petchakan led the First Tee Golf program, which teaches youth the fundamentals of golf. Her involvement with the organization inspires her to continue working with the program after graduation.

“I want to help out with the First Tee Golf Program to ensure that children are learning the core values of life while playing the wonderful game of golf,” Petchakan said. “Essentially I want to help kids get into sports at an early age.”

Working toward a business major, Petchakan plans to start a career in marketing after she graduates.
