OJAI, Calif. – The top freshmen on the Oregon men’s tennis team held their own in their first trip to the Pac-10 Championships on Thursday.

Alex Rovello and Robin Cambier each won their first round matches to move into the round of 16, however a pair of top-10 opponents proved too much for the first year players to continue their run through the singles bracket.

Rovello opened his first Pac-10 Tournament with a straight-set victory over California’s Chris Konigsfeldt. The Portland, Ore., native dominated the first set with a 6-1 win and held off a rally by winning the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4). In the round of 16, Rovello drew top-ranked Steve Johnson of USC and fell to the No. 1 player in straight sets (6-2, 6-1).

Cambier defeated Washington’s Martin Kildahl for the second time this season, holding him off in a first-set tiebreaker and closing it out easily in the second set (7-6 [8-6], 6-3). The win was his 21st of the season, tying three players for the sixth most in UO history. The Brussels, Belgium native then faced No. 9 Bradley Klahn of Stanford and gave him all he could handle. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Cambier forced a deciding set with a 6-4 win. Klahn found another gear however and finished off Cambier with a 6-1 win in the third set.

Jose Izquierdo and Aaron Clissold also played in the championship draw, but suffered straight set defeats against ranked opponents in the first round. Izquierdo fell to No. 43 Daniel Nguyen (6-2, 6-2) of USC while Clissold fell to No. 46 Ryan Thacher (6-4, 7-5) from Stanford.

Over in the invitational bracket, Douglas Mayeda is still alive after moving into the quarterfinals on a default. He will take on California’s Zach Gilbert at noon on Friday. Sho Higuchi also saw action in the invitational bracket, but fell in three sets to Washinton’s Matt Stith (7-6 [7-4], 6-7 [4-7], 6-3).

The Ducks will begin the doubles portion of the tournament on Friday with the first matches beginning at 10 a.m.
