VANCOUVER, Wash. – The No. 56 ranked University of Oregon men’s tennis team defeated Portland State University, 7-0, in a non-conference neutral-site dual on Monday (Mar. 26) from the Green Meadows Club in Vancouver, Wash.

“Today was definitely a day I thought we went through the motions a little bit,” remarked head coach Nils Schyllander.  “It was an important match in the sense that we got finals week out of our life and still a comfortable 7-0 win.”

The victory over the Vikings (2-13) marks the second such occasion this season for the Ducks having opened the spring dual season with a 7-0 win against Portland State on Jan. 20.

Oregon (13-1) opened the match in commanding fashion by sweeping the doubles to earn the first point in the dual.  The Ducks were led by their No. 1 doubles team of junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier who defeated PSU’s Roman Margoulis and Mitch Somach, 8-2.  The Mullen/Cambier combination is now 22-1 on the year dating back to the start of the season.  They continue to improve on their school record for doubles wins in a season.

As was the case in January, the Ducks swept the singles en route to the 7-0 victory. Highlighting the singles play was a trio of straight-set victories from the bottom half of the singles lineup.  Junior Aaron Clissold defeated the Viking’s Abinav Mishra, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.   Senior Sho Higuchi and Douglas Mayeda each contributed a singles point by taking down Alex Marx, 6-2, 6-4 and Nick Fracchia, 6-2, 6-0, respectively.

The Ducks will next face a very strong University of Portland team coming off a three-match streak having already eclipsed the 10-win mark on the year.

“Tomorrow we face the strongest Portland team they have fielded in recent memory.  They will be fired up and we must match and surpass their energy and do what we’ve been doing all season long,” said coach Schyllander.  “We will face a stiff challenge.”
