EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 66 ranked University of Oregon men's tennis team defeated the University of Arizona in impressive fashion, 6-1, on Friday (Apr. 13) at the Student Tennis Center.
The win for the Ducks moves them to 16-5 on the spring and is their first Pac-12 conference win of the year.
"The guys showed they were ready to play, they showed up really hungry and ready to play," said men's head coach Nils Schyllander. "We took it to them right away in the doubles and the energy carried over to the singles."
The Ducks started off the dual by sweeping the doubles and capturing a 1-0 lead heading in the singles portion of the dual. Headlined by No.1 doubles team of junior Jeff Mullen and sophomore Robin Cambier, the Oregon Ducks team tallied their 77th collective doubles win. Mullen and Cambier defeated Arizona's Kieren Thompson and Sumeet Shinde, 8-4, while Oregon's Alex Rovello and Izquierdo took down the Wildcat's Sebastian Ionescu and Andre Vidaller, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Oregon's Aaron Clissold and Daniel Sardu beat out Arizona's Mario Urquidi and Carlos Bermudez, 8-3.
In singles, the Ducks continued their hot start behind the quick and efficient victory by Rovello over Urquidi, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. The win for Rovello breaks a six-match losing streak and is his 13th singles win of the spring. Oregon backed up their 2-0 lead with a win at No. 3 singles by Mullen, who defeated the Wildcats' Shinde, 7-5, 6-3 before Clissold clinched the match for the Ducks at No. 6 singles with his victory over Ionescu, 6-4, 7-6.
"A decisive 6-1 win over a team in conference is a great win," added coach Schyllander. "We need to enjoy this for another half day before we get ready to send our seniors off in style. They've given a lot to this program and we want to make sure they have a very memorable last home match."
The Ducks invite everyone out for the home finale and as always admission is free.
