LAS VEGAS – The University of Oregon men’s tennis team dominated the opening day of the Easley Memorial Classic, winning 9-of-10 matches Friday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV. The Ducks advanced three players to the semifinals in singles play and two doubles teams to the quarterfinals.

Senior Robin Cambier and sophomore Kevin Farin won two matches in Flight A, while junior Joey Swaysland won a pair of matches in Flight B. Oregon won both its doubles matches in Flight A.

“I’m very pleased with how well we competed across the board,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “Kevin (Farin) gutted out a huge win against a nationally ranked opponent. The way he went about winning -coming from behind - showed a lot of heart.”

Farin led the Ducks, going 3-0 on the day with a singles victory over a nationally ranked opponent. He defeated Vasil Surduk of Seminole State handily in round one, dropping just one game (6-0, 6-1). The Brussels, Belgium, native met UNLV’s Ace Matias, the No. 76 singles player in the nation, in the quarterfinals. After dropping the first set 4-6, Farin claimed the second set 6-1 and prevailed in a tiebreaker in the third set, 7-6 (4). Farin will meet Auburn’s Lukas Ollert in the semifinals.

Cambier continued his impressive form, winning both his singles matches in straight sets. He defeated Seminole State’s Tendai Tapfuma 6-1, 6-3 in the opener. Cambier defeated Auburn’s Denis Lengsfeld in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Cambier is searching for a second singles flight title of the fall season. He will meet Auburn’s Dan Cochrane in the semifinals.

Swaysland wasted little time in either of his Flight B matches today, claiming both in straight sets. He opened with a 6-3, 6-1, win against Northern Arizona’s Jordan Gobatie. Swaysland met Alex Barrios in the quarterfinals and prevailed 6-2, 6-1. Swaysland will meet UNLV’s Willie Sublette in the semifinals.

Junior Daniel Sardu also won a singles match in Flight B for the Ducks. Sardu dealt Gulf Coast’s Adrian Legarreta a 6-2, 6-1, setback in round one. Sardu come up short against Auburn’s Dante Saleh 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Oregon won both of its Flight A doubles matches 8-2 Friday. Cambier and Farin defeated Gulf Coast’s Adrian Legarreta and Ahmad Saleem, while Swaysland and Sardu knocked off Idaho’s Cesar Torres and Artemly Nikitin.

“(Saturday) is a new day,” said Schyllander. “We’re deep in the tournament and it will only get tougher from here. We need to get a good night’s rest and see if we can show up (Sunday) with the same energy.”

Action will begin Sunday from UNLV at 9 a.m. (PT). The quarterfinal and semifinal doubles rounds will be played out along with semifinal singles.
