SEATTLE - Sophomore Daan Maasland's singles run came to an end in the Nordstrom Open as the UO men's tennis team closed the fall season Monday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. After opening with four staight wins, Maasland was upended by the top-seeded player in the field.
Highlighted by Maasland's stellar play, the Ducks capped the fall season with quality performances at the open event in Seattle. The Ducks won 16 matches on the weekend; 10 in singles and six in doubles.
"Overall, this was a very positive end to the fall season," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "We got a ton of experience, won a lot of matches and played at a very high level. I'm very pleased with the way we competed this weekend."
Competing in his first fall event of the season, Maasland picked up where he left of after his stellar freshman campaign. The Geldrop, Netherlands, native drew the No. 5 seed in the singles main draw and won four straight matches en route to a semifinal appearance.
Maasland met top-seeded Scoville Jenkins, a former ATP pro who was once ranked as high as No. 187 in singles. Maasland came up short, 6-2, 6-4, but accomplished his goal of reaching the semifinals. In his professional career, Jenkins once competed against Roger Federer in the 2007 U.S. Open and also qualified for the 2009 French Open.
"It was great to have Maasland back," said Schyllander. "He started where he left off last season as a freshman. I think he gained a lot of confidence at this event."
Freshman Jayson Amos also won three singles matches to reach the round of 16, while junior Daniel Sardu also reached the round of 16 with two victories. Sophomore Brent Chin picked up one victory and reached the third round.
Both of Oregon's doubles tandems won three matches to reach the semifinals in the doubles main draw.
Sardu and Chin defeated fourth-seeded Jenkins and Jesse Walter, 8-7, on Sunday to reach the semifinals. Third-seeded Maasland and Amos defeated Viktor Farkas and Wendell Wantanabe, 8-6, on Sunday to reach the semifinals as well.
Competing in four events, Oregon closed the fall season with a combined 58-29 record in all matches and won two main draw flight titles. In singles play, the Ducks were led by senior Robin Cambier in wins with nine, followed by sophomore Kevin Farin (7), Amos (7), Sardu (5), Chin (4) and Maasland (4). Cambier and Farin led the Ducks in doubles play this fall, posting an 8-1 record together.
Oregon opens the sprind dual season on Jan 17, 2014, hosting Portland State at the UO Student Tennis Center. Last season, the Ducks posted a 16-8 dual record and reached a program-best ITA ranking of No. 33.
