EUGENE – Pavlina Smatova ’s biggest singles win of the dual season was not enough as No. 6 UCLA sent the Oregon women’s tennis team to a 6-1 loss at the Student Tennis Center on Saturday.

Smatova picked up her 10th dual win of the year by upsetting No. 58 McCall Jones to give the Ducks (7-11, 1-6 Pac-10) a point, but the Bruins won the other eight matches to improve to 14-5 (4-1 Pac-10).

“It was a tough match today” head coach Paul Reber said. “Hats off to UCLA, they played well in the big moments. Pavlina did a great job winning her match. It’s a great reward for her with all the hard work she’s put in and the tight matches she’s played this year. Patricia (Skowronski) and Pascale (Neubert) had tough losses, but they battled hard through the end.”

The Bruins quickly secured the doubles point on the strength of 8-1 and 8-3 wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots, respectively. Smatova and Patricia Skowronski nearly picked up their most impressive win of the year as they led the Bruins’ top pairing of Courtney Dolehide and Andrea Remynse (No. 13 in the nation) 6-5. However, UCLA’s duo fought back to force a tiebreaker and completed the doubles sweep with a 7-6 (7-3) win.

UCLA clinched the dual with straight-set victories out of No. 61 Andrea Remynse (6-0, 6-1 over Julia Metzger ) at No. 3, Carling Seguso (6-2, 6-4 over Rabea Stuckemann ) at No. 6 and No. 90 Courtney Dolehide (6-2, 6-3 over Lana Buttner ) at No. 5.

Smatova (No. 116 nationally) got Oregon on the board by pulling out a straight-set victory over 58th-ranked Jones. The senior battled through a tight first set and got stronger as the match progressed to eventually win 7-5, 6-3. The victory is her first over a ranked opponent during the dual season.

At the No. 2 spot, Skowronski took her first set against No. 44 Noelle Hickey. With the score tied 4-4 in the second set, Hickey forced a super tiebreaker set by winning two straight games and eventually downing Skowronski (3-6, 6-4, 10-3). Neubert got fire in the middle of her match with No. 112 Pamela Montez to force a third set, but Montez outlasted the freshman (6-4, 1-6, 6-4).

The Ducks are back in action on April 8 when they travel to Long Beach State.
