EUGENE, Ore - The University of Oregon women's tennis team was defeated by the No.9 California Bears, 7-0, on Saturday (Mar. 17) at the Student Tennis Center on campus.
The Ducks (8-3) had a lot of momentum going into the match against California after winning their previous five matches, but California proved to be the better team this week.
California is now 4-0 in the Pac-12 and 11-4 overall and has soundly won their last four matches, continuing their winning streak by defeating the Ducks.
The Ducks fought from behind the entire dual and the Bears took all three doubles matches to secure the first point of the dual. The No. 27 ranked tandem of Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting defeated Julia Metzger and Trudie du Toit, 8-2. The No. 38 ranked duo of Jana Juricova and Zsofi Susanyi took down Oregon's team of Patricia Skowronski and Sofia Hager, 8-4 while Raeba Stueckemann and Pascale Neubert dropped their doubles match 8-1 to Alice Duranteau and Cecilia Estlander.
In the singles matches, Hager and DuToit were defeated quickly by their opponents Schutting and Goransson, respectively. Hager lost 6-0, 6-2, and du Toit was defeated 6-1, 6-0. While Julia Metzger came out strong in her match, she eventually lost 6-3, 6-0 to Juricova, who is ranked No. 6, nationally. Lana Buttner battled with Estlander in both sets, but lost the match 6-2, 6-3. Stueckemann struggled in the first set, losing 6-1, but came back strong in the second set, making it difficult for Duranteau to defeat her. Stueckemann lost the second set 7-6.
The most exciting match was between Skowronski and No. 17 ranked Susanyi. Susanyi defeated Skowronski 6-2 in the first set, but Skowronski came back in the second set to win 7-5. It came down to tiebreak points, where Susanyi came out on top, winning 10-4.
The Ducks will travel to Arizona and Southern California for their next five matches.
