Women's Tennis Wraps Day One at Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - The University of Oregon women's tennis team completed the first day of singles play in the 2012 Pac-12 Championships in association with the 122nd Annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament advancing three onto the second round.  The second round, originally scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday (Apr. 26), was postponed due to rain to the morning of Friday (Apr. 27) at the Ojai Athletic Club.

For the Ducks, junior Patricia Skowronski led the way defeating USC's Kaitlyn Christian (7-6 (3), 6-0) in the first round of the Pac-12 Women's Singles Championship Draw.  Also advancing for Oregon was freshman Sofia Hager who won her seventh match in her last 11 appearances over Utah's Sammie E. Watson (6-3, 6-3) in the Pac-12 Women's Singles Invitational Draw.  Last but not least, Oregon Lana Buttner was victorious in her first round Invitational draw match against Washington's Adrijana Pavlovic (7-6 (6), 6-2.

Also competing in the Pac-12 Women's Singles Championship Draw for the Ducks were junior Julia Metzger and senior Trudie du Toit.  Metzger, dropped her match to Stanford's Ellen Tsay (6-1, 6-2) while du Toit fell to Utah's Anastasia Putilina (6-1, 6-4).  Both Metzger and du Toit will next appear tomorrow (Apr. 27) in doubles competition beginning at 8 a.m.  Rounding out Oregon's singles matches were Rabea Stueckemann and Lena Macomson competing in the Pac-12 Women's Singles Invitational Draw.  Stueckemann fell to Cal's Alice Duranteau (6-1, 6-2) while Macomson dropped to No. 8 seeded Leighann Sahagun of Arizona State (6-0, 6-0).

Competition for the women will resume tomorrow (Apr. 27) at 8 a.m. with the regularly scheduled Championship Draw and Invitational Draw doubles.  Competing for the Ducks will be Skowronski, Hager and Buttner in second round singles play while Skowronski/Hager, du Toit/Metzger, Macomson/Buttner will begin their doubles matches.  Skowronski will be matched against third seeded Mallory Burdette of Stanford while Hager will play USC's Gabi Desimone and Buttner takes on ASU's Sahagun.  In doubles Skowronski/Hager will face Stanford's Tsay and Ellen Tan while Buttner/Macomson take on Arizona's No. 1 seed Hailey Johnson and Sarah Landsman.  Elsewhere Metzger/du Toit will take on Stanford's Natalie Dillon and Veronica Li as Oregon's Pascale Neubert/Stueckemann match up with Washington State's Elizaveta Luzina and Luda Vasilieva.  Immediately following doubles, the second round of the singles will resume at 10 a.m.  Following the resumption of the second round, the quarterfinals for each the Championship and Individual Draws will take place at 3 p.m.
