Women's Tennis Completes First Day at USAFA
Release Date: 10/05/2012
In singles, senior Julia Metzger defeated Northern Colorado's Elizabeth Tapia in the first round 6-1, 6-1 and is scheduled to face Eastern Michigan’s Diana Davitaia tomorrow. Sophomore Nicole Long also defeated a player from UNC in Jenn Buchanon 6-0, 6-2 and is scheduled to go up against Texas Tech’s Nikki Sanders tomorrow. Junior Rabea Stueckemann took down Colorado State’s Abby Stevens 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 and will play Arizona’s Laura Oldham tomorrow. Freshman Brooke Hughes saw her first singles action of the season against Colorado State’s Kendall Heitzner, but fell 6-2, 3-6, 10-4. Senior Lena Macomson earned a first round bye, but was unable to defeat Denver University’s Michelle Garpenlov in the second round, losing 6-4, 6-0.
“With the high altitude conditions I thought we played well for our first tournament of the fall season,” said head coach Paul Reber.
UO’s doubles teams also performed well today as underclassmen Long and Hughes teamed up to beat CSU’s Schulz and Heitzner 8-6, before losing to DU’s Bergner and Rath 8-5 in the second round. They will face Wyoming’s Nemcova and Kovacs on Saturday morning. Metzger and junior Pascale Neubert took down DU’s Schnell and Eerenbeemt 9-7, before falling to Wyoming’s Zhelyazkova and Parizher 9-7. They will battle against Arizona’s Oldham and Johnson in the morning. Macomson and Stueckemann unfortunately lost their first doubles match to host site Air Force’s Hueffner and Magday 8-3 as well as CSU’s Heffron and Stevens 9-7.
“I was very happy with our doubles play,” added Reber. “Our two newcomers Nicole and Brooke were very solid and could be a team for us once the dual season begins. I would especially like to recognize Pascale for her efforts today. Having dealt with a shoulder issue for a while now, it was great to get her back on the court even if she had to serve underhand. As she recovers from her injury she will be an integral part of the team this year. We are looking forward to play tomorrow as we feel we get better in this altitude the more days we are exposed to it.”
The Ducks continue their participation in the USAFA Invitational tomorrow morning at 9 am MT. Check back on goducks.com for results when tomorrow’s action is over.
