Doubles Wins Not Enough as Ducks Fall to Utes, 6-1
Release Date: 03/23/2011
UO (7-8) claimed the doubles point with victories from its top two teams. Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski moved into a tie for fourth place in school history with their 19th victory of the season with an 8-6 win over Anastasia Putilina and Paige Miles.
Oregon’s No. 2 team of Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger secured the point with an 8-6 victory over Evgenia Kryuchkova and Lexi Provancha.
Utah bounced back by sweeping all six singles matches, though the majority of them were close. The singles portion of the competition featured four matches that lasted three sets, including two that went to a third-set tiebreaker. The Utes took the lead with quick wins at the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Oregon appeared to be in good shape however, as Oregon claimed the first set in three of the other four matches. Smatova, the No. 79 player in the country, cruised to a 6-1 first set win over No. 77 Putilina at No. 1, Skowronski grabbed a 6-3 win over No. 105 Kryuchkova at No. 2 and Pascale Neubert claimed a 7-5 first-set win over Provanchova at No. 6.
Utah fought back to claim each of those matches to secure the match as Putilina topped Smatova (1-6, 6-4, 7-6 [7-5]), Kryuchkova outlasted Skowronski (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Provancha knocked off Neubert (5-7, 6-2, 6-3). Metzger also fell in three sets, two of which went to tiebreakers, against Lucia Kovarcikova (7-6 [7-1], 4-6, 7-6 [7-1]).
“We did a good job today taking the doubles point,” head coach Paul Reber said. “Unfortunately, we came out in the wrong end of four three-set singles matches. Two of which went to a tiebreaker in the final set. We’ll take tomorrow to recover and get ready to take on BYU Friday.”
Oregon caps its road trip at BYU on Friday. That dual begins at 10 a.m.
