FRESNO, Calif. –  Oregon completed the first day of the Bulldog Classic Friday evening on the campus of Fresno State. The Ducks went 4-7 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play.

The seven-team tournament was changed slightly on match day combining the flights to maximize the amount of matches played.

“For most of the girls, it was their first tournament of the year,” head coach Paul Reber said. “Only Lina and Jasmine had played before this tournament.”

In Flights A&B, Nicole Long dropped the first set to Jennifer Cornea of Cal Poly, but rebounded and won the next two for the 0-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory but dropping out at 4-3 through her second match against Sophie Watts due to injury. Jasmine Minor won her first match over Rana Sherif Ahmed of Fresno State 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. Minor battled with Petra Jurova of Fresno Pacific in the first set but was swept in the second set and lost 7-6(1), 6-0.

Like Long, Lina Åkesson dropped her first set, 4-6, but bounced back defeating Marina Todd of Portland State 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. The Swedish national however didn’t have the same result in her second match falling to Anne Sussdorf in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 in Flight C&D. Allie Hueffner, in her first collegiate singles match, won her the first set over Megan Govi but wasn’t able to take the following two-sets and fell 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

Kadie Hueffner dropped her first singles match in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to Bety Flores of Idaho but regrouped and recorded her first collegiate victory over Megan Lee of Fresno Pacific 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, the duo of Long/Minor defeated Megan Govi and Marina Todd of Portland State 8-1 in Flight A. The Hueffners dropped their first collegiate match together to Jennifer Cornea and Ane McPike 8-7. In Flight B, Lena Macomson, who was paired up with Maya Mammetguyyeva of Fresno Community College fell to Kepler/Tsugai of Cal Poly 8-2.

“It wasn’t our best, but we are definitely moving in the right direction,” Reber said. “We are moving in the right direction and just have to make sure we get better every day we are here.”

The Ducks resume play tomorrow at 9 a.m. beginning with doubles play followed by singles action after.
