BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Oregon opened its spring season with six victories, four in singles action and two in doubles play on Saturday at the IU Winter Invitational. Lana Buttner and Nicole Long each notched a win in singles and doubles play.

"We had some girls who didn't play this fall due to injuries so it was great to get them back on the courts competing again," said head coach Paul Reber. "We definitely have people on the right track to be playing well come the start of the dual match season."

In their first match since the dual season last year, Rabea Stueckemann and Sofia Hager both lost after forcing tiebreakers. Up 6-1 in the first set over Shannon Murphy of Indiana, Stueckemann dropped the second set 6-1 and then 10-8 in the tiebreaker. After dropping the first set, 6-2, to Abilene Christian’s Brittany Reed, Hager rallied in the second set (7-6) but eventually fell 10-7 in the tiebreaker. Jasmine Minor also dropped her first singles match in a tiebreaker, falling to Alecia Kauss (IU) 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.

"Playing the new format (10 point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set) was good for us today," said Reber. "It will pay off doWn the road for sure. We had four of our eight matches go the distance, unfortunately Allie was the only one to pull out the win, but the others battled hard and came up just a little bit short."

Long won in straight-sets, defeating Monica Lin of Harvard 6-1, 6-1. Buttner was victorious in her first match of the year, defeating Amanda Lin of Harvard, 6-4, 6-4. Allie Hueffner came away with the only victory for Oregon that went into a tiebreaker as the freshman defeated Kayla Fujimoto of Indiana 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-5. Kadie Hueffner also came out victorious on the first day, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Ansley Boarman (ACU).

Maja Salibasic lost her first singles match of her collegiate career dropping a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Vanessa Foltinger of Marquette.

Hager and A. Hueffner dropped their first doubles match together, falling to Garre/Fujimoto of Indiana 6-4. Oregon’s pair in Long/Minor improved to 3-1 on the year, defeating Reed/Walker of Abilene Christian, 6-3.

In her first collegiate match, freshman Kluiving teamed up with Buttner and defeated ACU’s pair of Hermsdorf/Hermsdorf 7-5.

“I was a little nervous since it was my first match as a Duck, but it felt great to win together with Lana,” said Kluiving.

Salibasic and K. Hueffner won their opening doubles round robin match, 6-1, over the mixed doubles team of Boarman (ACU)/Kanner (MU) 6-1. The win was Salbasic’s first victory donning the Green and Yellow.

"Doubles was good for us today going 3-1 and having two teams advance to the quarter finals," said Reber. "We are still working out the combinations we want so to have a couple teams play well is certainly moving in the right direction."

The Ducks are back in action at Indiana tomorrow morning, beginning with doubles play at 7 a.m. (PST).

"We are looking forward to another tough day of tennis tomorrow and hope we can keep things going," Reber said.
