EUGENE – The Oregon women’s tennis team dropped its match at home in its Pac-12 opener to Utah, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks dropped a close battle in the doubles point before the Utes reeled off two quick wins in singles play to seal the win.

The loss marks the fifth-straight year Oregon (5-5, 0-1 Pac-12) has dropped its conference opener. The last time UO won its conference opener was during the 2008-09 season when Oregon downed Arizona, 4-3.

Heading into the match, Lana Buttner and Sofia Hager were Oregon’s most dependable pair with a 7-0 mark since the start of the dual season. The reality of it however was much different with the pair falling to Utah’s No. 2 doubles pair, 8-2.

Trailing 5-3 at No. 1 doubles, Nicole Long and Jasmine Minor went on a ferocious rally to take the 7-6 lead but didn’t finish their match after Utah’s (7-2, 1-0 Pac-12) pair of Callie Craig and Sarah Pham put an end to Kadie Hueffner and Allie Hueffner’s rally. The Ute’s staved off the Hueffner’s rally at No. 3 doubles after it was tied at 5-5, and went on to win 8-5 to seal the doubles point.

Utah’s Tereza Bekerova was dominant the entire match at No. 1 singles, downing Long in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Filling in at the No. 6 singles slot, Lina Åkesson fell to Luisa da Rosa 6-3, 6-3.

The 44th-ranked Utes came away with the 4-0 win after Minor lost to Pham, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

Playing up one spot, A. Hueffner came out firing to open the match by taking the first set 6-2. A. Hueffner was up 1-0 in the third set, after Utah’s Paige Miles rallied to take the second set 7-5, before the Utah clinched the match.

Marlou Kluiving also saw her match left unfinished after rallying back to take the second set 6-4 after she had surrendered the first set by the same score. Hager was dealt the same fate after rallying to take her second set as well over Craig 6-3.

The Ducks return to the Student Tennis Center at noon on Sun., March 9, against No. 60 Colorado.
