EUGENE – Six-unanswered goals by No. 18 William & Mary snapped a second-half tie and sent the Oregon lacrosse team to a 12-8 setback at Pape’ Field on Friday night.
The Ducks drop to 3-3 with the loss while the Tribe move to 3-1 on the season.
Oregon got on the board less than three minutes into the game as Ashley Inman converted a feed from Bina Barrett for her third goal of the season to make it 1-0. William & Mary answered at the 6:16 mark when Molly Wannen beat Salliebeth Finnegan for an unassisted tally to even the score up.
Jess Drummond scored Oregon’s next two goals, both coming on feeds in transition from Shannon Propst, to give the Ducks a 3-1 advantage nearly 14 minutes in. Drummond finished the contest with a season-high tying four goals.
The Tribe erased the deficit and built their first lead of the game with three-straight goals from Golden Grace, Wannen and Krystin Mackrides to make it 4-3 with under five minutes left in the opening frame. However, Drummond continued her first-half onslaught with her third of the day with 54 seconds remaining to send both teams into the break tied at four apiece. Oregon outshot William & Mary, 16-14, and held an 11-9 advantage in ground balls in the opening frame.
The contest remained tied until the 5:56 mark when Mackrides connected for her second goal of the evening, though Drummond capped her day to even the score once again just 1:03 later.
From that point, the Tribe took control of the contest with their six-goal onslaught. W&M outscored UO, 6-0, over the next 15:27 to grab an 11-5 lead. Bina Barrett brought Oregon back within five with 7:34 remaining, but the Tribe responded with their 12th goal to put the game away.
Barrett and Alex Breiner capped the scoring with a pair of goals 31 seconds apart. Barrett finished with two goals and two assists for four points, tying Drummond for the team high.
Salliebeth Finnegan got the start and clocked 37:38 in the crease while stopping six of 11 shots. Caroline Federighi took the loss to drop to 0-2 after turning aside six of 13 William & Mary shots.
The Ducks are off until March 21 when they travel to Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Note: Alex Breiner finished with three points (one goal and two assists) to move into fourth all-time at UO with 136 points, passing Jana Bradley in the process.
