EUGENE, Ore.- The University of Oregon lacrosse team (14-4, 7-0 MPSF) has never made a postseason appearance, but will look to capitalize on their first trip to postseason play after winning the program's first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament title last Sunday at Stanford. The Ducks meet the winner of the Patriot League, Navy, (17-2, 6-0 Patriot) on Saturday (May 5) at 1 p.m. at Pape' Field in Eugene.
The match-up between the Ducks and Mids is just one of three play-in games that will happen across the country prior to the announcement of the 16-team field that will take place on Sunday (May 6) on NCAA.com at 6 p.m. (ET) The winners of the play-in games receive automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament along with five other conference champions (America East, American Lacrosse, ACC, Big East and Ivy). The other play-in matches are Towson vs. Monmouth and UMass vs. Canisius.
UO, who is on a nine-match winning streak, is currently being led offensively by sophomore Nikki Puszcz, who has amassed 55 points from 37 goals and 18 assists. Right behind Puszcz in the half-century club is senior Kristina Barrett with 29 goals and 24 assists for 53 points and sophomore Shannon Propst with 51 points (32 G, 19 A). The Ducks have five others that have accumulated double-digits in the points column. Seniors Jana Drummond has 43 points (32 G, 11 A), Jess Drummond has 33 (27 G, 6 A), sophomore Hayley Milner has 28 points (21 G, 7 A), and junior Kate Cathell and sophomore Sami Kiser round out the group with 17 (8 G, 9 A) and 15 (13 G, 2 A), respectively.
In goal, the Ducks have been fortunate to have sophomore Caroline Federighi as their last line of defense. Federighi (14-3) currently has a 9.16 GAA and has 128 saves, good for a .496 save percentage. Nationally, Federighi is ranked in the top 50 in goals against average (14), saves (28), saves per match (47) and save percentage (7).
For the Mids, junior Jasmine DePompeo, who is seventh in the nation in points leads the offense with 81 points from 37 goals and 44 assists. DePompeo's 44 assists are ninth most in the nation and are the Navy single-season record. Navy's goal scoring leader is junior Kathy Young with 57 goals.
In net, five different Midshipmen have seen action, but the majority of the time has been split between Michelle Verbeeck and Elaina Ponchione. Verbeeck (7-0) carries a 7.54 GAA and has 67 saves for a .479 save percentage. Ponchione (10-2) has 65 saves (.474) and has recorded a 8.71 GAA heading into Saturday's match.
Tickets to Saturday's match between MPSF Coach of the Year Jen Larsen-Beck and Patriot League Coach of the Year Cindy Timchal are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and children and $2 for groups of 10 or more. Oregon students will be admitted free with their student IDs. Children under the age of two will be admitted free with a paying adult.
