EUGENE, Ore. - Mary Pond, after lifting a combined total of 137.5 kilograms in the snatch lift and clean and jerk, took home Most Outstanding honors at the 19th annual Oregon Weightlifting Classic, hosted by the Oregon athletics department, on Saturday afternoon inside the Casanova Center weight room.

University of Oregon strength and conditioning coaches Jim Radcliffe, Geoff Ginther and Joel Favor helped organize and host the event.

The field of 22 competitors was broken down into 13 weight classes (five women, eight men) and winners of their divisions took home state titles. Each participant was given three attempts at progressively increasing weights in both the snatch lift and clean and jerk with their highest successful weight in each lift added together for their total. A vote by three judges determined the Most Outstanding Award.

Pond, weighing less than 58kg, lifted a state record 80kg in the clean and jerk after hoisting 57.5kg in the snatch. Competing for her club, Heavy Athletics, Pond's combined total of 137.5 kg gave her the best lifted weight-to-body wieght ratio among women's competitors. A close second was Erin Tieder of East Coast Gold who lifted a combined 140kg after weighing in at 69 kg.

In the men's divisions John Elliott of Heavy Athletics had the best lifted weight-to-body weight ratio with a combined 260kg after weighing in at 85kg. Elliott was successful at all three weights in each lift, maxing at 110kg in snatch and 150kg in the clean and jerk.

The tightest competition came in the 105kg wieght class where Oregon's Scott Penny tied Oregon State's Chris Roth at 257.5kg total on his final lift in the clean and jerk. Due to Penny weighing in lighter than Roth, Penny took home the gold and the state title.

The biggest lifter of the day was Oregon State strength and condition coach Brendan Ziegler of the 105+ kg weight class who lifted 312.5 total kilograms with a 137.5kg max in the snatch and a 175kg max in the clean and jerk. The former defensive lineman at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. won this event two years ago.
