The University of Oregon's Green Garter Band (GGB) and Yellow Garter Band (YGB) will perform in their annual end-of-year concert, slated for 4 p.m. May 15 in the Erb Memorial Union Ballroom on the University of Oregon campus. The performance, which is free to the public, will feature both new tunes and game-day favorites.
The show will also be the farewell performance for several seniors who are
leaving the garter bands. In addition, newly-selected members of both
groups will take the stage for the first time during the
concert. Read more about the event and see who is already attending
The GGB and YGB are the two 12-member scholarship ensembles within the
Oregon Athletic Bands. They are the most versatile and elite athletic
musical groups on campus. Often seen tailgating before
football games, the garter bands play everything from classic Oregon Marching
Band tunes such as "Louie Louie" and "Duck Tales" to
student-arranged versions of popular music. Instrumentation for each band
consists of: four saxophones (two altos, one tenor and one baritone), one
mellophone, three trumpets, two trombones, bass guitar and drums.
All garter band members are selected by audition from the Oregon Marching
Band. GGB members receive an annual scholarship equal to approximately 12
in-state credits per term. YGB members receive an annual scholarship
of $850. Both bands have a faculty advisor, but student directors organize
all music selection, rehearsals and performances.
The GGB, founded in 1983, performs at University of Oregon athletic
events, including home volleyball games and many women's basketball games.
The group also performs at a variety of venues on and off campus and
often performs at high schools, where it is also active in recruiting
potential members to the Oregon Athletic Bands.
The YGB, formed in 2002 in response to the high demand for the Green
Garter Band, also performs at UO athletic events, including women's
basketball and softball, in addition to many commitments on and
