Oregon's second game of the season was much closer than the first, but the result remained the same with the Ducks (2-0) downing the Rainbows (0-2) in front of another standing room only crowd at Les Murakami Stadium.
UO jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth only to see the ‘Bows claw back with a pair of runs in the sixth and push another across in the ninth before advancing the potential tying run to third base with two away in the final frame. It was then that Sherfy officially resumed his All-America closer form, getting pinch hitter Kaeo Aliviado to fly out to left to end the game.
Sophomore lefthander Tommy Thorpe (1-0) earned the win with five solid innings, including pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth. Thorpe scattered seven hits and struck out four.
Healy finished 3 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI. Six other Ducks recorded a base hit, including junior leftfielder Brett Thomas, who went 1 for 4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
Darrell Hunter saw his first career action on the mound for Oregon and the junior from Springfield pitched a pair of scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one in a key middle relief role.
Hunter entered the game with no outs in the sixth after UH had plated two runs to pull within 5-3 off fellow righty Cole Wiper, who had started the frame in relief of Thorpe.
Freshman lefty Garrett Cleavinger worked a scoreless eighth as the setup man to Sherfy.
Game 3 of the four-game set is scheduled for Sunday at 3:05 p.m. PT as Oregon freshman lefthander Cole Irvin makes his collegiate debut opposed by Hawaii's Connor Little.
