ORLANDO, Fla. - In a battle between returning World Series advancers, the No. 10 University Oregon softball team (14-3) topped No. 11 LSU (14-3) to open action Friday in the Citrus Classic.

The ESPN3.com-broadcasted game featured a pair of All-America senior pitchers, and UO's Jessica Moore (8-2) rose to the challenge in her third complete game of the season.

The Sutter, Calif., native struck out five, walked, one, allowed six hits, and both of her runs allowed were earned.

LSU starter Rachele Fico (9-2) pitched the opening 3.1 innings, struck out two, walked three, gave up eight hits, and seven of her nine runs allowed were earned.

Ashley Czechner worked the final 1.1 innings, logged no strikeouts and one walk, gave up no hits, and her one run allowed was unearned.

Junior shortstop Courtney Ceo (3-for-4) paced the Duck offense by tying her career high in hits and also stole her seventh base of the season.

Sophomore centerfielder Janie Takeda followed her in the lineup with a 2-for-3 effort.

The duo started the game with a pair of singles, and senior second baseman Kaylan Howard knocked in the first on an error by the second baseman.

Junior catcher Alexa Peterson added a suicide squeeze bunt for Oregon' second and final run of the first inning.

The Ducks added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Peterson and an infield ground-out by senior right fielder Samantha Pappas.

Oregon struck for five more runs in the fourth inning thanks to singles by freshman left fielder Danica Mercado, Ceo and Takeda, a fielder's choice by Howard, and junior first baseman Kailee Cuico's fifth homer of the year - a two-run shot.

UO's final run came in the fifth, thanks to a two-out walk, and pair of infield errors.

At the plate for LSU, six players hit safely once in the two teams' first-ever meeting.

The Bayou Bengals scored their two runs in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, LSU loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an error before pinch-hitter Dylan Supak stroked a two-run single through the right side.

Moore ended the threat with an infield ground-out and strikeout with the bases still loaded.

The Tigers also put a pair of runners on to start the second inning, thanks to a pair of infield singles. Moore coolly answered with two strikeouts looking and a ground-out to avoid the top of the lineup that stanza.

Moore's effort improved a host of top-10 totals in the school career record books for wins (first, 81), strikeouts (first, 773), appearances (first, 146), innings (second, 755.1) and complete games (sixth, 67).

Immediately after on Friday, UO takes on another NCAA tourney returnee in LIU-Brooklyn at the ESPN Sports Complex.

Later in the weekend, Oregon faces Boston College and Temple Saturday at 7 and 9:15 a.m. Pacific Time, and No. 14 Michigan and James Madison on Sunday morning at 6 and 8:15 a.m. PT.
