EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon beat BYU, 5-2 at home on Friday afternoon. The Ducks improve to 9-1 overall and the Cougars fall to 5-3.
"I'm really happy with us today by beating a tough BYU team that took us out two years ago. I was really happy with the way we came out in doubles and competed hard and taking the point there."
In doubles play, senior Patricia Skowronski and sophomore Nicole Long won the No. 1 doubles match by defeating Nicolette Tran and Meghan Sheehan-Dizon, 8-2. Senior Julia Metzger and junior Pascale Neubert topped Morgan Anderson and Mackenna Maddox, 8-4, in the No. 2 match to capture the doubles point for Oregon and give them a 1-0 lead in the match. Desiree Tran and Aubrey Paul were leading Sofia Hager and Brooke Hughes, 6-5, before Oregon won the doubles point and suspended the match.
Sophomore Nicole Long beat Desiree Tran to continue her remarkable conference leading winning streak in the No. 1 match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Long has now won 14 straight singles matches and improves to 17-2 overall.
"In singles I thought we did a really good job in coming out and making sure we were ready to play from the first point. Credit to my side, the No.1, No. 3 and No. 5 matches who got off to some quick starts to make sure they took the first sets and it gave everyone else a chance to relax and ease themselves into their matches a little bit more without that pressure."
Junior Lana Buttner won in a tiebreaker in the No.5 spot, 6-0, 7(7)-6(2) to put the Ducks ahead 5-0.
Sofia Hager was leading Nicolette Tran, 6-4, 4-2, in the No. 4 singles match before retiring after Oregon had already won the match to give BYU the point. Junior Rabea Stueckemann also retired her match in the second set of the No. 6 match to give BYU their second point.
"Really happy with how we came out today and we are ready for a tough Denver team on Sunday."
The Ducks remain at home and play Denver on Sunday, March 10th at 9:30am.
