EUGENE, Ore.—The University of Oregon acrobatics and tumbling (5-0) team won its final home meet of the season against Azusa Pacific University (1-4) to remain undefeated on the season. The meet’s final score was 283.950-270.280.
“We’re doing really well skill wise, but one of the things we’re working on is being able to flip the switch mentally,” said head coach Felecia Mulkey. “We want them to have fun on the sidelines but focus when they go out there in any environment. We don’t want to go to the national championship and get caught up in the hype and not be able to perform when we need to, so we’ve been creating some traffic in practice and forcing them into some pressure situations. We are really getting ready for the national championship tournament mentally.”
With an energetic and loose attitude, the Ducks started the meet out on fire as they bested the Cougars in all four heats of the Compulsory round, with the high score coming in the toss heat where Oregon notched a 9.90 out of 10. Overall, UO won the round 37.75-36.80.
Oregon kept up the strong performance in the next two rounds, as the Ducks did not lose a single heat the remainder of the first half. After three Acro heats, UO led 28.65-26.70 in the round. In the Pyramid round, Oregon recorded a perfect 10 in the third heat en route to a 29.75-29.25 victory in the round.
Coming out of halftime, Oregon maintained control, outscoring Azusa Pacific in every remaining heat before the Team Routine. The total score after the three Toss heats came out to 29.00-28.35 with Oregon on top. For the Tumbling round, coach Mulkey decided to switch the lineups a bit and challenge her team. The girls responded to their coach’s call and swept the Tumbling round, winning 56.60-53.60.
“In Tumbling, we tried some really difficult combinations to see how they would score. The officials from tonight are pretty tough gymnastics judges, so those were some realistic scores for us. We wanted to see how those different combos would play out for us to see what we can put together moving forward to score as high as we possibly can in the tournament,” added Mulkey.
The meet’s final event, the Team Routine, marked another victory for the Ducks and sealed the sweep, as they scored a 102.20 at the maximum starting value of 110.00, while the Cougars scored a 95.58 out of 107.89.
Oregon returns to action on Saturday, April 6th as they head to Waco, Texas to take on the Baylor Bears for the second time this season. The NCATA National Championship tournament takes place in Hamden, Conn. on April 25-27.
