DENVER, Colo. — The Oregon Ducks closed out the 2013 season with a 14-6 loss at No. 11 on Friday afternoon.
Oregon finishes the year 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Denver, which has won 14-straight overall, is now 16-1 and 8-0 in conference play. The Pioneers clinched the regular season championship last week and will be the No. 1 seed at next week's MPSF Tournament in Eugene.
Senior Kate Cathell and junior Shannon Propst each recorded two goals to pace the Ducks today. Propst, who set the single season points record last Sunday, finishes the year with 68 total points (29 goals, 39 assists). Her 39 assists is also a single season record.
Denver opened up a 4-0 lead to start the game but the Ducks closed the half on a 4-0 run to make it a tie game heading into the break.
But in the second, the Pioneers came out firing and scored the first five goals of the half to take a 9-4 lead with 17:36 to go. Denver's Jill Remenapp and Rachael McKinnon accounted for four of those five goals.
Oregon pulled to within three (9-6) after Propst scored her second goal with 14:05 left, but Denver's second 5-0 blitz of the half put the game out of reach.
Denver out-shot the Ducks, 37-22, and won the draw control battle, 12-10. Oregon registered 15 ground balls to Denver's 16.
Senior Bridget Morrison scooped up two ground balls in the game. She finishes her career with 99 ground balls, good enough for sixth all-time at Oregon. Junior Caroline Federighi made 10 saves and senior Salliebeth Finnegan posted one save in the final match of her career.
The 2013 MPSF Lacrosse Tournament will be held in Eugene next week. Semifinal action begins on Thursday (May 2) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday's (May 4) championship is scheduled for 1 p.m. Fans can visit the tournament website for more information.
