John Bubalo
Position: Hall of Fame Inductee
Other Position: 2001 Inductee, Baseball (1940-43)

John Bubalo starred as a first baseman, outfielder, and relief pitcher during the World War II era. A standout from 1940-1943, Bubalo led the Northern Division in batting average his junior and senior years with a .443 clip in 1943 and a .339 average in 1942. A gold glove in the field, Bubalo also recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 1942, and made just one error in 1943 for a .994 mark.

Perhaps most impressive, though, was that Bubalo’s team captured Northern Division championships all three years he participated on the varsity squad (1941, 42, and 43). Highly sought-after by the major leagues, the Portland native was forced to pass on professional baseball opportunities because of his military obligations and in order to complete his degree from the UO Medical School.
