He may have been too big for the train’s sleeping berths on road trips, but he was just the right size for Oregon’s most decorated basketball team. The tallest player on the west coast at 6-8 also was one of its best and he proved it by leading the Tall Firs to the 1939 NCAA championship. During the Ducks’ unprecedented drive to the national title, he not only used his offensive skills as an uncharteristically fine outside shooter, but was categorized as Coach Howard Hobson’s best defender.

He finished second to a teammate among Northern Division scorers, led the league in field goals and must have been the leading rebounder, although those statistics weren’t recorded. After pulling down 31 rebounds in a game at Washington, he was lauded for his aggressiveness by vanquished opponents. He scored 28 points in the three NCAA tournament games and was accorded all-America honors following his senior season.
