Oregon’s first two-sport all-American, the quarterback-outfielder established Oregon’s single-season passing record in 1954, breaking the record of Norm Van Brocklin, and still ranks among the Ducks’ all-time passers, throwing for more
than 3,000 yards.
“Baseball was more fun for me,” he said, “but I was better at football.” No wonder, then, that he gravitated toward the gridiron after graduating in 1955. As the No. 1 draft choice in the National Football League by the Baltimore Colts, he
spent seven seasons in the professional ranks with the Colts, New York Giants, Minnesota and Denver of the AFL.
