It was a team of both firepower and depth. Arguably one of Oregon’s most talented of all time, 22 athletes represented the Ducks at the NCAA championships at Hayward Field and 11 of them scored to culminate the program’s second national championship ever and help catapult Oregon track and field’s storied legacy. Harry Jerome (100 meters) and Les Tipton (javelin) claimed individual national titles while the Ducks added five more finishes among the top three placers to tally 70 points, outdistancing second-place San Jose State by 30 points. Jerome, Tipton, Kenny Moore and Gerry Moro would compete in the Olympics in subsequent years, with Jerome, whose personal-best 10.0 tied the world record, earning a bronze medal at 100 meters for Canada in the 1964 Games in Tokyo. Oregon also made history in the NCAA meet by becoming the first school to ever sweep the top three finishes in the same event, with Tipton, Gary Reddaway and Ron Gomez placing first, second and third in the javelin.
