Dick Whitman

The school record-holder with a .397 career batting average, Dick Whitman led the Ducks’ baseball team to two Northern Division titles in 1941 and 1942. With a .412 average as a junior, Whitman sits fourth all-time in single-season batting average. An outstanding center fielder, Whitman committed only two errors in his entire Oregon career, good for a .985 fielding percentage. Whitman graduated from the University of Oregon in 1942 and was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers (1946-49), where he played alongside Jackie Robinson, and finished his career with the Philadelphia Phillies (1950-51). A leader both on and off the field, Whitman also served his country in World War II, rising to the rank of master sergeant in the United States Army.
