Despite dismal pre-season prognostications, Oregon earned the school’s first Rose Bowl appearance in 38 years and the assessment by legendary Len Casanova as “the most amazing team I ever coached.” Picked to finish seventh in the Pacific Coast Conference, the Ducks weathered a season full of close calls with a team blessed with strong-willed players, including five future professionals, and outstanding coaches to share the league title.

Oregon possessed the league’s best scoring defense and featured a running attack of halfback Jim Shanley and fullback Jack Morris behind all-league guard Harry Mondale, averaging more than 200 yards per game. The Ducks finished with a 7-4
record, losing three times by the margin of a field goal. That included the 10-7 Rose Bowl setback to Ohio State when the Ducks were 20-point underdogs, yet outgained the Buckeyes and were voted the game’s most valuable player, quarterback
Jack Crabtree.
