When women’s athletics was just spreading its wings at Oregon, she provided instant credibility. She was the first woman to win a national title in any sport for the Ducks. Before her career was over, she owned four swimming all-America certificates as a freestyle sprinter.

She captured the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women in the 50-yard event during the 1975 season and held six school records as a freshman. The native of Coos Bay won four events in the fledgling conference meet the next year. The Oregon Daily Emerald said she “probably will never go down in Oregon athletic history as one of the greats. But it won’t be because she didn’t deserve it.” That is no longer the case.
